Henry VIII met his fourth wife Anne of Cleves for the very first time here in the precincts of Rochester Cathedral on New years Day 1540.

Anne was staying overnight enroute to meet the King in London, but the King was impatient to meet his bride to be. He donned his travelling robes and rode down to meet her bringing with him a gift of furs.

Anne was watching new year day festivities from a room in the Bishop’s palace. Henry burst into the room, Anne turned to see who had entered and not recognising the King, turned back to look out of the window.

Henry was furious and threw down furs and stormed out.

Not the happiest of first meetings!
